Trauma Informed Bodywork | Portland OR

In massage or craniosacral sessions I often inquire with my clients about what they feel in their body. It is not uncommon for me to hear “ I don’t know, I can’t really feel anything there.”, “It feels numb” or “It feels far away”.

Trauma and overwhelm cast us outside of ourselves. As we do somatic healing work together there is often a vary palpable change in the body’s density. Intuitively I feel some clients need more lightness, movement or spaciousness in their muscles. On the other hand, others need grounding and to “arrive” into their being.

To me, as the outside person, it either feels heavy like there is grounded energy (sometimes too much density) or lightness, like the person isn’t able to be inside of themselves at all. It is quite “loud” to me at this point when someone is in fight/flight/freeze mode.

Living in fight/flight is more common than not these days and that means most often I am helping those clients who feel numb and “light” come back into their being. Here are some somatic tools to help you if you feel ungrounded. These tools can help you come back into rest/digest mode - calming anxiety and quieting the mind.

I do virtual somatic support sessions if you are not in Portland. I would love to work with you hands on if you are here! Schedule online here if you’re interested.

Take good care,

Sophie
